Hazel Reeves teaching portrait sculpture

‘We all enjoyed your portrait-head course – thank you so much for being such a patient, kind and inspiring teacher’ – an experienced sculptor

Portrait Sculpture with Hazel Reeves (Summer), Phoenix Arts, Brighton, East Sussex

Summer school: Monday 5-9 August 2019, Monday to Friday, 11.30am – 5.30pm (£340 includes clay and model costs, firing not included) SOLD OUT

Sculpting a portrait in clay can be a very rewarding experience. This course will explore how to observe heads – how to see their differences and similarities, and in turn learn how to translate this understanding into a sculpture which captures a likeness of the sitter. During the five days a life-sized clay portrait of a live sitter will be built on an armature, then prepared for firing. This concentrated modelling will be interspersed with fun exercises – with clay and without – to help train up the eye and hands. Course fee includes most materials but please bring an A4 sketchpad and drawing implement (pencil, pen etc).  This course will be taught in a way suitable for those with experience of sculpting in clay and those new to it. Firing is not included. Maximum: 8.

Portrait Sculpture Masterclass with Hazel Reeves, The Art Academy, London

Summer school: Monday 12-16 August 2019, 10-5pm,  Intermediate to Advanced (price £395 includes clay and model, firing not included)

Portrait sculpture is an immensely absorbing and enjoyable discovery with every new sitter. This course aims to build upon your previous experience [Intermediate/Advanced] to further how to observe and translate your observation into a clay portrait sculpture from a life model. Refresh, renew or find alternative ways of looking through group and individual discussion with your tutor. Whether setting out a portrait head from a structural point of view with a clear path of constructive method and/or searching for a more expressive manner of approach, you will benefit from exploring with a professional sculptor to help build upon your own sculptural experience. Hazel will take you through the tried-and-tested method she uses to set up a life-size portrait for a commission. This approach ensures the portrait is structurally-sound before moving-on to working on the detail of features. A likeness will slowly emerge over time.
