The Pankhurst maquette: the pose

In “Rise up, women”, I want to convey Emmeline’s vitality, courage, dignity, and beauty, while capturing some of her driven and uncompromising nature, essential in transforming the establishment. How to do this?

Her stance – strong, upright and active – portrays her power, dynamism, courage and dignity.

Her face – striking and animated – helps portray her beauty, passion and vitality.

Her clothing – light, summer attire – helps portray her elegance and slight stature.

In fact, Emmeline considered that the Suffragettes should be the best-dressed women in any room – a way to disarm critics.
