PALLANT HOUSE: Moving with Nightingales

At a special Lates event at Pallant House on March 6th 2025 I’m delighted to be delivering Moving with Nightingales, a movement workshop in collaboration with dance facilitator Rosaria Gracia and students of Chichester University dance department. Soundscapes will be composed from my field recordings of the Knepp nightingales.

This is an event linked to Maggi Hambling’s new exhibition – Nightingale Nights – at Pallant House gallery, Chichester. These extraordinary paintings are based on her experience of joining folk singer Sam Lee in pitch darkness in the Knepp scrubland to listen to the nightingales. You will enjoy a guided tour of this exhibition (5.30pm) before the workshop (6 – 8pm). Costs £20 for workshop with optional guided tour. BOOK HERE!

Workshop description – this innovative workshop will invite participants to respond to the beauty of nightingale song through movement, in a playful and accessible way. Immersed in the birdsong recorded on the Knepp rewilding estate by sound artist Hazel Reeves, the workshop will include a warm-up process and careful introduction to how the soundscapes can inspire movement. The session will then evolve to create movement individually and in groups inspired by these sounds of the natural world, over bluetooth headphones. Facilitated by dancer Rosaria Gracia and supported by dance students from University of Chichester, this workshop will offer a supportive and enjoyable experience, for participants to build confidence and connect with others.

Please wear layered comfortable clothes and comfy shoes. Bring water bottle and snacks if necessary.

The workshop is for any ability and for age 18+.
