THE GUARDIAN: Our Emmeline – ‘powerful and evocative statue’
Delighted that on International Women’s Day, The Guardian is featuring my statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, ‘Rise up, women’, as part of the Great British Art Tour, in partnership with Art UK. The author of ‘The Great British Art Tour: Manchester celebrates ‘Our Emmeline’, who changed history’, Anthony McIntosh, is the Head of Sculpture at Art UK.
Before the unveiling of the statue – affectionately known as ‘Our Emmeline’ – I was able to welcome Anthony to my studio to talk about the centenary of the Representation of the People’s Act and the sculpting of Emmeline Pankhurst – he wrote a very interesting article ‘Deeds not Words: commemorating the women’s suffrage movement through statues’.
